Do you ever feel like you’re constantly racing against the clock?
We’ve been there—burning the midnight oil, juggling countless tasks, and feeling like we’re spinning our wheels.
As business owners, time is our most precious commodity. But the answers we need are right there in the Bible – if we’re willing to look.
This week’s episode is inspired by the devotional “Redeeming Your Time” by Jordan Raynor. Let’s dive into some practical steps you can take to live with purpose and passion.
Step 1: Study the Word
Our first step is grounding ourselves in God’s word. Like Martin Luther, we recommend a structured approach to your morning devotions. Here’s how:
- Choose a Passage: Start with a passage from the Bible that resonates with you.
- Dive into Commentary: Understand the context and deeper meaning with the help of a commentary.
- Respond in Prayer: Focus on four key elements:
- Instruction: What is the passage calling me to do?
- Praise: What am I grateful for that this passage reveals about God?
- Confession: Where have I fallen short and need God’s forgiveness?
- Supplication: How can I ask for God’s grace to follow His commands?
This practice grounds us in God’s word, aligning our priorities with His purpose for our lives.
Step 2: Find Grace-Based Productivity
Feeling overwhelmed by an endless to-do list? You’re not alone. Our minds simply weren’t built to carry that mental load. The solution? Get it all out of your head and onto paper (or a digital tool). Capture every commitment, then tackle them one by one.
- Brain Dump: Write down everything you need to do, big or small.
- Prioritize: Sort tasks by importance and urgency.
- Action: Focus on completing one task at a time, celebrating small wins along the way.
Step 3: Minimize the Noise
External distractions can wreak havoc on our internal peace and productivity. Follow Jesus’ example – as His popularity grew, so did His need for solitude. Whether it’s a sensory deprivation tank or just a quiet walk, find the stillness that allows you to hear God’s voice.
- Create Quiet Time: Schedule regular moments of silence in your day.
- Limit Distractions: Turn off notifications and set boundaries for interruptions.
- Reflect: Use this time to meditate on your goals and align with your purpose.
Step 4: Prioritize Your Yeses
Aiming high with bold, God-sized goals makes it easier to say no to the trivial. Ask yourself: Is this the best use of my time? Am I trying to do good or just look good? By clarifying your true priorities, you’ll have the focus to make impactful choices.
- Set Clear Goals: Define what success looks like for you.
- Evaluate Requests: Before committing, consider if it aligns with your goals.
- Say No Gracefully: Politely decline tasks that don’t serve your purpose.
Step 5: Eliminate Hurry
Like Jesus, who left Jerusalem when it was already late, learn to gracefully decline requests that would force you to rush. Consider: Am I the best person for this? Is it a generous use of my time? This will help you welcome productive busyness while banishing harmful hurry.
- Assess Your Schedule: Identify and remove non-essential activities.
- Delegate: Assign tasks to others where possible.
- Build Buffer Time: Allow extra time between tasks to avoid rushing.
