Business Coaching and Marketing Strategies to Accelerate Your Growth

Episode 152 —Knowing When to Leave: The Leadership Skill No One Talks About

Have you ever stayed somewhere longer than you should have?

A networking group.
A job.
A leadership role.
A volunteer position.

Not because it was still right for you but because you felt loyal, guilty, or maybe even afraid of what people would think.

It’s more common than you think. And if you’ve ever wrestled with that internal question “Is it time for me to go?” you’re not alone.

This week on the Ms. Biz Podcast, we’re diving into a skill every successful leader eventually has to master: knowing when to leave.

Why We Stay Too Long

As humans, we are creatures of habit.

We build routines. We form relationships. We find comfort in familiarity. And before we know it, what once challenged and fulfilled us becomes… expected. Predictable. Even draining.

Sometimes we stay because:

  • It’s part of our identity
  • We don’t want to look like a quitter
  • We feel loyal to the people involved
  • We’re avoiding uncomfortable conversations

But here’s the truth:
Every opportunity has a season. And wisdom is knowing when that season has come to an end.

5 Signs It Might Be Time to Move On

Not every tough moment is a sign to leave but there are signals worth paying attention to.

1️⃣ Your Growth Has Plateaued

Healthy environments stretch you. They challenge you and introduce new perspectives.

If you’re no longer growing just maintaining it may mean you’ve already learned what that space was meant to teach you.

2️⃣ Your Calling Has Shifted

What once felt aligned now feels like obligation.

Your priorities change. Your energy shifts. Your purpose evolves.

And sometimes honoring that new direction requires creating space for what’s next.

3️⃣ You’re Preventing Someone Else’s Growth

This one is often overlooked.

As leaders, staying too long can unintentionally block others from stepping up.
True leadership isn’t about holding a position it’s about raising others into one.

4️⃣ The Cost Now Outweighs the Value

Every commitment costs something:

  • Time
  • Energy
  • Mental space
  • Family impact

If the return on that investment is no longer there, it’s worth asking:
Is this still the best use of my time and gifts?

5️⃣ Your Peace Is Gone

This might be the most important signal of all.

When you feel:

  • Drained instead of energized
  • Obligated instead of excited
  • Tense instead of fulfilled

It doesn’t automatically mean you should leave but if it’s consistent, something is out of alignment.

And ignoring that feeling long-term can impact you mentally, physically, and spiritually.

The Exit Test: 3 Questions to Ask Yourself

Before making a decision, pause and evaluate:

1. Am I leaving because it’s hard or because the season is over?
Not every challenge is a reason to walk away.

2. Am I staying out of loyalty or fear?
Leadership decisions should be based on purpose—not pressure.

3. Am I making space for something better?
Leaving isn’t about escape—it’s about stepping into your next assignment.

How to Leave Well (Because It Matters)

Leaving the right way is just as important as the decision itself.

✔️ Honor the Season

Even if things changed, that experience played a role in your growth. Lead with gratitude.

✔️ Communicate Clearly

Don’t disappear. Have the conversation. Express appreciation. Give notice.

✔️ Leave Bridges Not Burned Ground

The business world is smaller than you think.
Today’s colleague could be tomorrow’s client, partner, or referral source.

Here’s the Shift Most Leaders Realize

Sometimes leaving doesn’t damage relationships it actually strengthens them.

Because when you’re in the right place, you show up fully.

But when you stay out of obligation?
You show up halfway. And no one benefits from that.

Growth Isn’t Just About What You Start

It’s also about what you’re willing to release.

The most effective leaders regularly ask:

  • Is this still aligned with my mission?
  • Is this the best use of my gifts?
  • Has this season run its course?

Because sometimes…
the next door doesn’t open until you close the current one.

Your Challenge This Week

Take a few minutes to evaluate your current commitments:

  • Networking groups
  • Leadership roles
  • Volunteer positions
  • Even services within your business

Ask yourself honestly:
👉 Is this helping me grow or holding me back?

And if you’re in that in between space, where you’re unsure whether to stay or go you’re not stuck.

You’re being invited to evaluate.

If this resonates with you, share your experience. One honest conversation could help someone else recognize their next step.

And if you want a structured way to walk through this decision, we’ve created an Exit Evaluation Grid to guide you.

Because clarity creates confidence.
And confident leaders make aligned decisions.
