Business Coaching and Marketing Strategies to Accelerate Your Growth

Episode 163 —Are You Afraid of Failure, or Are You Afraid of People Watching You Fail?

Fear of failure is something every entrepreneur faces.

But what if the thing holding you back isn’t actually failure?

What if the real fear is something deeper — the fear of being seen failing?

On this week’s episode of the Ms. Biz Podcast, we explore a question that can completely change the way you think about fear:

Are you afraid of failure, or are you afraid of people watching you fail?

Because those are two very different things.

The Fear Isn’t Always Failure  It’s Humiliation

Imagine you were completely alone on an island. No social media. No audience. No coworkers. No competitors. No one watching.

If you tried something and failed, would it feel as devastating?

For many people, the answer is no.

The pain often isn’t the failure itself. The pain comes from the fear of judgment, embarrassment, disappointment, or worrying about what others will think.

Many people are not living their lives — they are managing their image.

Instead of asking, “What am I called to do?” or “What do I truly want?” they ask:

“What will people think?”

And that question can quietly control our decisions.

Stop Living for Other People’s Opinions

We often overestimate how much other people are paying attention to us.

Think about a child who walks into a room and feels embarrassed because everyone is watching them. To them, that moment feels huge. But in reality, most people are focused on their own lives.

Adults do the same thing.

We worry about:

  • Posting something online because someone might judge us
  • Launching a business because it might not succeed
  • Speaking up because someone might disagree
  • Trying something new because we might look inexperienced

But the truth is, most people are not analyzing your life the way you think they are.

They are thinking about their own.

The embarrassing moment that feels permanent to you is usually something others forget much faster than you realize.

Failure Isn’t the Enemy — Avoiding Your Purpose Is

Some of the most successful people in the world have failed publicly.

They launched products that didn’t work.
They made mistakes.
They faced criticism.
They experienced setbacks.

But they kept going.

The difference between those who succeed and those who stay stuck is often not talent — it is the willingness to continue after things do not go according to plan.

Failure can teach you.
Failure can strengthen you.
Failure can redirect you.

But allowing fear of judgment to keep you from trying can prevent you from ever discovering what you are capable of.

Build Your Identity Beyond Achievement

One of the biggest dangers for entrepreneurs is allowing success, reputation, or public approval to determine their worth.

Because image is unstable.

A single mistake can change public opinion. A single post can receive criticism. A single setback can make you question yourself.

That is why your identity has to be built on something deeper than accomplishments or approval.

When your confidence comes only from what other people think, fear will always have control.

But when your identity comes from your purpose, your values, and your faith, you become much harder to shake.

How to Overcome the Fear of Being Seen Failing

If you find yourself avoiding opportunities because you are afraid of judgment, start small.

Ask yourself:

“Am I avoiding this because I’m afraid of failure, or because I’m afraid of embarrassment?”

Then practice doing things that create discomfort:

  • Post the video even if it isn’t perfect
  • Speak up in the meeting
  • Start the project you have been putting off
  • Take the next step even when you feel nervous

Confidence is not built by avoiding discomfort.

Confidence is built by walking through it.

As we discussed on this episode of the Ms. Biz Podcast, courage often comes after humiliation — not before it.

Many people become fearless not because life was easy, but because they survived the things they thought would destroy them.

Stop Protecting Your Image and Start Living Your Purpose

The greatest tragedy is not failing publicly.

The greatest tragedy is never trying because you were too afraid of what people might think.

Your dreams, your calling, and your purpose are worth pursuing.

Do it scared.
Take the step.
Learn along the way.

Because the people who are willing to try are the ones who eventually discover what they are truly capable of.
